The Moon
The Moon is Earth’s quiet companion. It is about 384,000 kilometers away, roughly one quarter the size of Earth, and about 4.5 billion years old. Its gravity pulls on our oceans and creates the tides, but its influence goes much deeper than that. The Moon helps stabilize Earth’s axial tilt, keeping our seasons and climate more stable over long periods of time. It has also acted as a shield of sorts, taking countless impacts from asteroids and comets that might otherwise have reached Earth. More than just a beautiful object in the night sky, the Moon has helped shape the planet we live on.

The Sun
The Sun is the heart of our solar system, a gigantic sphere of glowing gas about 1.39 million kilometers wide, so large that more than one million Earths could fit inside it. It sits at an average distance of about 150 million kilometers from Earth, yet its light reaches us in only about 8 minutes and 20 seconds. Every sunrise is really ancient sunlight completing its journey across space, bringing warmth, energy, and life to our planet from the star that makes everything around us possible.
